From the Households We Serve

We bought the reading pack for my mother-in-law, who misses writing letters to her relatives in Chiang Mai. The essays are short enough to read in an evening, and the stationery sheets are nice quality. She has now written three letters since April. That is more than she has written in five years.

The workshop was practical. We came as three adults — myself, my wife, and my father — and by the afternoon we had a working contact list and a folder system that actually makes sense. I expected more talking and less doing. It was mostly doing, which was what we needed. Only mild criticism: I wish the session had started a bit earlier in the day.

We have been subscribers since 2023. The quarterly bundle has become something the whole family looks forward to. My parents-in-law are in their seventies and my daughter is seventeen — they have found things to talk about in every bundle, which surprised us. The discussion sheet is particularly well made; it asks questions that don't have obvious answers.

I was not sure the workshop would be worth a full day. We are a busy family and weekends are scarce. But we went, and the session covered things we had been meaning to organise for two years — where the house documents are, what we would tell someone in an emergency about the household setup. Worth every baht and worth the day.

The reading pack is well written. The essays are not long, which suits us — we read them over a few evenings. My husband enjoyed the section on memory keeping more than I expected him to. We have not yet written a letter, but we have talked about it, which is a start. The stationery sheets are a good prompt to actually sit down and do it.

Second year on the subscription. We renewed without hesitation. The third bundle — the one on domestic correspondence across Southeast Asia — was the best yet. My father, who is not usually a reader, read the whole long-form essay in two sittings. We used the discussion sheet over a Sunday lunch and talked for nearly two hours. That doesn't happen often.

Household Journeys

Three Case Studies

The Chansiri Family — Phra Khanong

The Situation

A three-generation household — grandparents, a couple in their forties, and two teenagers — had no routine for writing to relatives in the provinces. The grandparents felt the distance. The teenagers had never written a letter.

What They Used

The Family Letter-Writing Reading Pack. They read the essays over two weeks as a household. The grandmother in particular engaged with the section on memory keeping and tone.

Six Months Later

The household had sent eight letters to relatives in Udon Thani and received six in return. One of the teenagers wrote independently. The grandparents described it as the most correspondence they had exchanged with family in fifteen years.

"We had the stationery sheets on the desk for three weeks before anyone picked one up. Then one evening my mother sat down and wrote four pages. After that it seemed natural."

The Yodsombat Household — Sathorn

The Situation

A couple in their fifties managing an extended household had no reliable system for household records. Routine paperwork — maintenance schedules, the landlord's details, the goods inventory — was distributed across three locations with no clear ownership.

What They Used

The Household Records Coordination Workshop. Four family members attended. The session focused on building a single-folder system for routine paperwork and drafting a shared contact list.

Outcome

Within two weeks the household had a working filing system and a printed contact list. Six months later they reported that the system was still in use and had been consulted during a maintenance issue — locating the plumber's number took under a minute instead of the usual half hour of searching.

"The half-day for paperwork paid for itself the first time we actually needed a document in a hurry."

The Phromrattana Family — Lat Phrao

The Situation

A household with three generations and a wide age spread — 68 to 14 — wanted to find a shared activity that wasn't screen-based. They had tried book clubs but found the pace and selection of formal groups didn't fit their schedule.

What They Used

The Multi-Generational Reading Subscription, started in early 2024. They set a loose household tradition of discussing each bundle over a weekend meal.

One Year On

All four bundles prompted some family discussion, with two generating conversations the family described as memorable. The household renewed for 2025 and also purchased the reading pack in January. The 14-year-old, initially reluctant, contributed to the discussion sheet questions twice during the year.

"A year ago I would have said getting our grandmother and our teenager to agree on anything was impossible. The bundles don't always manage it, but they come closer than anything else we've tried."
